Flights to Benbecula
Peaceful Benbecula is an ideal destination for anyone looking for a bit of rural Scottish charm. The island is fairly flat, so perfect for walking, and is studded with beautiful lochs. Linked to North and South Uist by causeway, the island is the perfect spot for exploring the Outer Hebrides.
Airports in Benbecula
Benbecula Airport (BEB) is a tiny, yet important, airport providing much-needed air connections between the Outer Hebrides and the Scottish Mainland.
Airlines that fly to Benbecula
Flybe (operated by Loganair) is currently the only airline offering flights to Benbecula. Flights are offered from Glasgow, Inverness and Stornoway.
Getting to your destination
There is a regular bus service from the airport to a number of destinations on Benbecula as well as a few places on North and South Uist. Although there are no major rental firms on the island, you can book car hire from Benbecula Airport from a few local garages. You will need to do this in advance, and somebody from the company will meet you at the airport with your vehicle. Having your own transportation is a good way to see more of the island and its neighbours, and can definitely be recommended.
When to visit Benbecula
The Outer Hebrides are at their best during summer (May to September). On warm days the beaches are picture perfect, and it's hard to believe you're in Scotland and not the Caribbean. Winter in the islands can be rough, but thankfully there are plenty of cosy pubs where you can hole up and enjoy a dram of whisky.
What to see and do
Water-sports: The Outer Hebrides are a heaven for water-sport enthusiasts. You can surf in the Atlantic, kayak in the sea lochs, dive through kelp forests or simply sail around the islands.
Enjoy a bit of culture: Independent art galleries and shops are abundant throughout the Outer Hebrides. Pick up a painting showing scenes of island life, or invest in some handcrafted jewellery. It would be remiss to visit the Outer Hebrides without taking part in a ceilidh. The Uist and Benbecula Fiddle and Accordian Club host a ceilidh every Saturday night: you don't have to be a member to go along, and the dances aren't too difficult.
Food: The Outer Hebrides are famous for seafood, particularly smoked fish. Both North Uist and South Uist are home to famous smokehouses. If you're planning to buy anything, be sure to visit the cash machine on Benbecula first.
