Discover Recife
“The Brazilian Venice” Recife is known for its historic buildings, beautiful beaches, and lively nightlife. The main tourist district can be found in the South of the City around Boa Viagem beach, which is conveniently close to the airport. The city centre with its historic buildings, bridges, and quaint neighbourhoods is a big draw for tourists and is a great place for a walking tour. Recife has a tropical monsoon climate, so remember to pack your waterproofs.
Airports in Recife
Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport (REC) serves Recife. It’s a very modern airport, and is one of the busiest in Brazil. There’s a good selection of shops in the departures hall, as well as a currency exchange and a travel information desk where you can pick up free maps of the city and get advice on onward transportation. Most of the dining options are in the airport’s food court, so if you’re hungry before your flight it’s best to eat before going through security.
Airlines that Fly to Recife
There’s a good selection of international flights to Recife, operated by American Airlines from Miami, TAP Portugal from Lisbon, Condor from Frankfurt, and Copa Airlines from Panama City.
The airport also has a good number of domestic flights, operated by Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, GOL Airlines, and TAM Airlines from most major Brazilian cities including Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro.
Getting into Recife
There’s a good range of transport options directly from Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre Airport, whether you want to take public transport or taxi.
The most efficient way to reach downtown Recife is with the MetroRec Subway system. The Southern Line stops at the airport (Aeroporto) and goes straight into Recife.
There are also two bus lines which run to the airport. Line 033 leaves from directly outside the terminal building every 20 minutes, and takes 15 minutes to reach Boa Viagem and 30 minutes to reach the city centre of Recife. Line 152, 153, 161, and 163 can be caught on the other side of the road, and will all drop you in the city centre.
There’s also the air conditioned “Aeroporto opcional” bus, which costs R$2.70. If you don’t want to take public transport, the airport also has a taxi rank. It costs roughly R$10 from the airport to Boa Viagem, and R$25 to the city centre. It’s always worth asking the taxi driver for an estimate before getting in, of course.
