Weather in Barcelona
March – May: Spring is mild and often sunny, with the occasional rain shower. It’s a good season for outdoor sightseeing before tourists arrive in full force.
June – September: Summer brings sunshine and water warm enough for swimming, but be prepared to dodge the crowds. A hot, dusty wind sometimes blows up from Africa, a phenomenon called ‘calima.’
October – November: Sweater weather is pleasant in Barcelona. But heavy rains can sometimes cause flooding, so be sure to pack an umbrella and boots.
December – February: The Catalan capital has mild winters, but the humidity can make it feel chillier. Bundle up and linger a little longer at your favourite cosy tapas bar.
Events in Barcelona
Festa de Sant Jordi (April): Sometimes called ‘Catalan Valentine’s Day’, this holiday finds friends and couples exchanging books and roses. Florists and booksellers set up stalls in the streets.
Primavera Sound (May to June): Music fans travel across oceans for this hotly anticipated springtime festival at the waterfront Parc del Fórum. The festival features international headliners and buzzworthy up-and-comers in genres ranging from electronic to hip-hop and R&B.
La Mercè (September): This is the cultural festival of Barcelona, honouring one of the city’s patron saints with five days of celebrations. Most events are easy to access, from free outdoor concerts to the incredible ‘correfocs’, when costumed revellers run through the streets lighting fireworks.
