About ITA Airways

The top passenger airline in Italy and one of the big players in the European airline scene, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about flying with Alitalia. The airline serves over 100 destinations in 44 countries, and has its main hub in Rome Fiumicino Airport. Alitalia is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, and is also part of the Transatlantic Joint Venture (along with Delta, Air France, and KLM). Alitalia has one of the most modern fleets in Europe, after a huge upgrade project took place between 2010 and 2014.

Alitalia is well known for its training courses, which cover flight, ground, and maintenance staff. They even offer a course for passengers who are afraid to fly: Voglia di Volare. The seminar is aimed at people who feel anxious about boarding a plane, whether they’re first time fliers or experienced travellers who have suddenly been overcome by fear.

Alitalia offer plenty of check-in options. Web check-in is available from the day before departure, and is one of the most popular options. Mobile check-in is also available on a number of flights, although the service is not available for children under the age of 11 or passengers who need special assistance. When you check in via mobile, Alitalia sends a barcode to your phone which you then show at the departure gate. Alitalia also offers fast check-in via automated kiosks, which are available in a number of Italian airports as well as large airports throughout Europe and Japan. Air France and KLM kiosks can also be used. Elite members of the MilleMiglia frequent flier programme can also check in via telephone, starting from four hours before departure. Tele check-in closes 40 minutes before departure on domestic flights, and 50 minutes before on medium haul. The service is available to Ulisse, Freccia Alata and Freccia Alata Plus members.
Every passenger is entitled to one item of hand luggage weighing up to 8kg and measuring up to 55cm high, 35cm wide, and 25cm deep. Checked luggage allowance is based on route and travel class. Passengers are usually allowed either one or two pieces of baggage, weighing up to 23kg or 32kg: again dependant on route. The sum of the bag’s dimensions shouldn’t exceed 158cm. Any oversized or overweight baggage will be subject to fees.
Alitalia offers a decent amount of legroom, with seat pitch generally falling between 30” and 35” inches in economy. Legroom on business class differs based on aircraft. On widebody jets business passengers have between 43.5” and 59” while narrowbody jets only offer a standard 23”-34” pitch, although the seats do recline.
There’s a EUR 6 service charge for tickets purchased online. This is cheaper than booking your ticket via the call centre, which charges EUR 9.50, and the Alitalia ticket desk which charges EUR 12 for domestic flights, EUR 25 for flights within the Schengen Area and Switzerland, and EUR 35 for all other destinations.
Eating on Alitalia flights is sure to be a pleasure. The airline have frequently won Global Traveler’s title of Best Airline Cuisine . Economy passengers can enjoy an inclusive snack or a light meal depending on the duration of the flight. There are also free drinks, tea, and coffee. Passengers on long haul flights departing from Italy can choose from two different menus. One offers a three course Italian meal, the other offers a snack or breakfast. Passengers on flights over eleven hours also receive a third menu, with an additional snack and drink. Business class passengers can enjoy tasty Italian wines, which have been matched to each dish by Alitalia’s staff sommelier. The menus are cycled three times a month, so frequent fliers don’t have to worry about getting sick of the same food each time.
Alitalia are an extremely punctual airline, with over 90% of their flights arriving and departing on time during 2013.
