Turning left when you board a plane is on many people’s bucket lists. Here’s everything you need to know about the difference between business class and first class flights.
What’s the difference between business class and first class flights?
Cabin class comparisons: what you need to know
Thoughtful touches, cabin design and dining options are all things that can vary depending on who you fly with. But the core of each tier remains the same no matter where you go or which airline you’ve chosen. Business class and first-class cabins are both premium options when travelling – reflected in their price tags. As the cost goes up, so does the quality.
Economy is the most affordable option followed by premium economy and then business class – with first class at the top end of the scale. To select your cabin class, the Skyscanner app and website both have a drop-down menu to browse before you begin your flight search. First, you must know the details of where and when you want to travel to find the options for premium class fares.

Business class
Reflected in the name, this type of cabin was designed with the business traveller in mind – so frequent jet-setters can travel with extra comfort. But you don’t have to be working to treat yourself to this premium ticket. For three or four times the cost of economy (on average), you can enjoy more privacy and stretch out into an extra spacious seat while sipping cocktails and eating a gourmet meal from the fixed menu.
Business class starts at the airport where you’ll have a speedy check-in at the dedicated premium desk. Quite often, you can get through security with a fast-track pass before reaching the lounges which can be used at your leisure.
On board, you’ll usually have lie-flat seats (especially if you’re flying long haul), desk space, and in-seat power supplies. Most airlines will gift you an amenity kit with in-flight essentials like a toothbrush, lotions, cosy socks and an eye mask. You’ll then get to choose from a range of complimentary dishes on the fixed menu along with a handful of premium drinks served in proper glasses.
Insider tip:
If you’re savvy, there are some business class hacks to get your seats upgraded.
First class
Although it can be very pricey, often costing in the thousands, flying first class is like a mini holiday in itself. At the airport, you might be given valet parking, expedited security, and concierge check-in. Many airlines offer extra special lounges just for first class customers where you can find anything from spa treatments, sommeliers, gyms and private dining areas.
Depending on the plane, you might board through a first class-only entrance where you’ll be shown around and taken to a cabin with fewer seats than in business class. The seats are as spacious as they get with optimum comfort and reclining abilities for an undisturbed snooze – with super soft designer bedding.
Amenity kits can have everything from silk pyjamas to luxury toiletries and special gifts inside. Some airlines offer complimentary Champagne to sip alongside elegant four-course meals that are as good as you’d find at a prestigious restaurant on land.
At a glance: Business class vs First class
- Business class is offered on most flights, but first class is often limited to long-haul or international travel.
- First class is in a smaller cabin but has a more spacious suite – also meaning the staff-to-passenger ratio is smaller.
- The standard of food is premium with both, but first class is more indulgent, sometimes offering things like lobster or silver service.
- With first class, you’ll receive superior amenity kits.
- Business class is significantly cheaper than first class.
- Airport lounges offer more extensive facilities and a higher level of service with first class.
- Onboard facilities are more varied with first class, sometimes with impressive features like showers, private apartments, and bar areas.
And what about premium economy?
There’s not a huge difference between premium economy and economy, but minor differences in your travel experience could make the journey a lot more enjoyable for a slightly more expensive seat. Generally, you can expect speedy boarding and a larger baggage allowance – which will make your time at the airport less stressful. On board, you’ll usually get extra legroom, a slightly bigger food menu, and noise-cancelling headphones.
Insider tip:
Even if you’re not flying business class or first class, you can still book an airport lounge from as little as £20 to add a splash of luxury before taking to the skies.
