Head to these dream destinations and make some once-in-a-lifetime memories
As we shake off the hangover from the pandemic, it’s the ideal time to book those bucket list trips you’ve been just itching to take. A bit rusty on where to go? We’ve got it covered, from luxury escapes in exotic destinations to wanderlust-sating adventures at the edge of the world. These are the epic experiences you don’t want to miss in 2023.
1. Take the Polar plunge in Antarctica

Kayak between crumbling icebergs, clamber up snowy slopes or simply melt inside as you watch fluffy penguin chicks huddle into their mums. Yes, these are just a few of the unbelievably bucket-list-worthy activities on offer for intrepid travellers heading to the South Pole, but there’s one once-in-a-lifetime experience that tops them all: the polar plunge. Since it takes nearly five days to get there from the UK (usually by flying internationally to Buenos Aires and then domestically to Ushuaia, before getting on a ship) it’s important to make the most of it. Get the best from your adventure by choosing an expedition cruise.
Swimming in the near-freezing Antarctic ocean is not for the faint of heart, but it is a truly unforgettable activity that few can claim to have experienced. Do it somewhere exceptional by taking a cruise that stops at Deception Island. This live volcano has an opening in its caldera that ships can sail into, and landing there is a box-tick moment all by itself. Plungers can jump into a zodiac boat and dock on the curved beach of Whaler’s Bay before stripping off outer garments and adding a layer of courage. Take a deep breath, then walk directly into some of the coldest waters on the planet. It’s invigorating, exhilarating and utterly unforgettable – plus it’ll give you serious bragging rights for years to come.
Insider’s tip: Don’t scrimp on packing.
You’re going to the coldest place on the planet, and once you leave Ushuaia, there’s nowhere to stock up. So before you depart, check you’ve got everything you need (including more motion sickness tablets than think you need – don’t get caught out by the infamous ‘Drake Shake’).
2. Soak up Scotland‘s North Coast 500 in an electric car

Scotland is on many wanderers’ ‘dream destinations’ list, and the country’s premier scenic route is a serious ‘must do’. Craggy cliffs, age-old castles and lounging harbour seals are just the start of the incredible scenery here. Though the 516 mile drive can be completed in five to ten days, we recommend taking it slow to really soak up the Highlands’ inimitable beauty. Plus, it means you can enjoy some of Scotland’s other wonders en route. Perhaps hop over to the Orkney islands and dive the Scapa Flow wreck, play a round of golf at the historic Royal Dornoch or tour the imposing Dunrobin Castle.
Insider’s tip: Get a ChargePlace Scotland card before setting off.
It’s only £20 for the year and means you can charge your car at any chargers on the CPS network without needing the internet or bespoke apps.
3. Sleep under the stars in the Sahara, Morocco

City dwellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle will love this luxury escape to the wild. Spend a night unlike any other in the vast Saharan desert. Sleep in a classic Berber tent, dine on Moroccan-spiced vegetable stews and trek out into the dunes for mesmerising nights of stargazing. Fall asleep to the sounds of softly snorting camels and the susurration of sand in this dreamy destination. Once-in-a-lifetime bliss? Check.
Insider’s tip: Pack thermal socks
Nights in the desert get cold, so bring layers, especially for those vulnerable extremities.
4. Be wowed by the Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Nothing says ‘bucket list’ quite like visiting one of the world’s most famous natural wonders. Dive into Australia’s best-known asset, the Great Barrier Reef, to experience a collection of over 3,000 individual reefs. Though known for its abundance of marine life, much of it is threatened, so it’s imperative to visit sooner rather than later and look into how you can help fund its conservation while you’re there. Swim with clown fish, groupers, turtles and perhaps even sharks in a destination that’s worthy of your ‘trip of a lifetime’ top spot.
Insider’s tip: Head out from Port Douglas or Cape York.
Most divers go to Cairns and travel out to the Great Barrier from there. Opting for an alternative port means less crowds on land and beneath the waves.
5. Dance like no one’s watching at the Rio Carnival

Whether you’re a late night lover or early riser, the world’s most prestigious party has got to be enjoyed at least once. The four-night-long Rio Carnival is a miasma of music, dance and celebration that consumes the city every April. Decide on a fitting fancy dress outfit, then lose yourself in the blocos (street parties), parades and jaw-dropping sambadrome, where over 100 samba schools come together to battle it out for the winner’s title.
Insider’s tip: Stay hydrated.
Rio is hot, and with all the dancing and excitement it’s easy to get dehydrated. Monitor your alcohol intake and remember to drink lots of water between the caipirinhas.
Bucket list experience FAQs
Start by listing your dream destinations and any activities you’ve always wanted to do. Big or small, they all count. Whether it’s bungee jumping over Victoria Falls or tasting fresh oysters for the first time, everything’s possible. We recommend writing them out and pinning the list somewhere prominent, that way you’re regularly reminded to make them happen.
Bucket list destinations differ for everyone, but there are some locations that crop up more often than others. Taking an African safari, touring the Galapagos and imbibing the romance of Santorini are all popular, while Rome, London and Tokyo often top ‘dream city’ hotspots. Island idylls such as the Maldives, Bali and Bora Bora often appeal to sun seekers, while the Egyptian pyramids, Petra in Jordan and Machu Picchu rank highly too.
