Where should I go in September?
September is one of the best months of the year to snap up a sunshine bargain. After all, this the beginning of “shoulder season”, that golden spot between high and low season where prices are lower and the weather is still lovely. The cooler weather makes city breaks and outdoor adventures way more accessible than in the heat of the summer, but you can also get some extended summer sun without travelling far.
Many southern European countries enjoy hot weather well into September, and beyond, while Northern European countries can still be fairly warm and sunny during early autumn. If you’re in the mood for a long-haul trip, the world is your oyster. The southern hemisphere (e.g. Australia and South Africa) is coming into spring, while autumn (fall) in the north-eastern USA (in states like Maine) is famous for crisp blue skies and vibrantly coloured foliage.

1. Tirana, Albania
Tirana, Albania
With the scorching temperatures of summer starting to wane, September is the perfect place to visit Albania’s capital city. This lively and city is a charming jumble of colourful buildings, with an interesting mix of old and new attractions. Start at Skanderbeg Square. This unique public space is home to some of the city’s most iconic attractions, including the National Museum of History with its powerful mosaic façade. Here you’ll also find the horseback statue of Albania’s national hero, after whom the square is named. Climb the 90 steps to the top of the Venetian-inspired clock tower for soaring views of the city. Once you’ve had your fill of local culture and history, take time to explore the city’s quaint boutiques and trendy eateries.
Albania has some truly incredible natural scenery, and September is the perfect time for a day trip from Tirana. Head an hour into the mountains to the town of Krujë, with its towering castle and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. If you’re tempted by the call of the wild, you can’t beat Dajti Mountain National Park. You’ll find lots of hiking trails and places to practice rock climbing. And don’t miss a trip to the stunning turquoise Lake Bovilla.

2. Oslo, Norway
If you’re not bothered about going somewhere hot in September, but still want adventure, head to Oslo. In early autumn, temperatures are still mild – and the crisp air and changing foliage makes exploring the city extra special. There’s plenty of cultural things to do in Oslo at this time of year, including dining at gourmet fish restaurants and browsing Nordic design boutiques. If you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Oslo Kulturnatt (16 September) where museums and galleries extend their opening hours. Also, the Northern Lights are often visible from mid-September until early April so keep your eyes peeled!
Of course, one of the best reasons to visit Oslo in September is to get out and explore the Great Outdoors. Oslo is the perfect jumping off point for a tour of Norway’s exquisite fjords – the city sits on the 100km-long Oslofjord and its many islands. Take a day cruise and sail through narrow inlets and past sheltered bays. Or, hop on a ferry to some of the fjord’s most popular islands. Wander around ancient monastery ruins at Hovedøya, go birdwatching on Ormøya and Malmøya, or stroll between colourful summer cottages on Lindøya.

3. Zanzibar, Tanzania
If you’re looking for an island in the sun to spend a September break, it’s all about Zanzibar. While the Caribbean is in the middle of its rainy season at this time of year, this little slice of African beach paradise is in the final month of its dry season. It’s seriously hot in September, with temperatures sitting around 30°C. At this time of year the kusi wind settles to a cool breeze, so waters are calm and diving conditions are excellent. Whale sharks start to arrive near Mafia Island in September, so you can go swimming with these gentle giants.
When you’re not frolicking in turquoise waters or lounging in a hammock, you can soak in a bit of the island’s unique culture. Stroll through the winding streets of UNESCO-listed Stone Town – the birthplace Freddie Mercury. There’s even a museum dedicated to the Queen singer. Another must-tick on your to-do list is a spice tour. This island nation was once known as the Spice Islands, and was an important trading hub for empires like the Portuguese and Omanis. Local companies offer tours, giving you the chance to visit spice plantations, taste local spices and learn how to cook with them.
