The rise of alternative and overlooked destinations
We analysed tens of thousands of data points to understand what’s trending and why. It’s clear that smaller, alternative destinations are growing in popularity with UK travellers, who are looking to explore beyond the mainstream in Europe and further afield.
01 Reggio
New budget flights are making it easier to stroll the southern Italian seaside city of Reggio Calabria, the most populous city in Calabria which sits across from Sicily on the Strait of Messina.
02 Tartu
Tartu, in eastern Estonia, is the country’s second largest city after the capital Tallinn and is attracting more attention after being named European Capital of Culture for 2024.
03 Siem Reap
Siem Reap, Cambodia’s second largest city, is the gateway to the temples of Angkor and, in recent years, has reinvented itself as a destination for culture, wellness and fine dining.
04 Baltimore
Stateside, the Maryland harbour city of Baltimore is drawing bigger crowds keen to explore a lesser-known US destination.
05 Portsmouth
It’s followed by the coastal town of Portsmouth in northeast Dominica, a small often overlooked Caribbean island known for its tropical rainforests, scuba diving and natural hot springs. With a new international airport being built and due to open in the next few years, connecting a direct flight from the UK.
06 Córdoba
Córdoba, in Spain’s southern region of Andalusia, is a big foodie destination and famed for its Great Mosque, historic old town, jasmine and orange blossom, and flamenco.
07 Tromsø
Tromsø, in northern Norway, is the perfect place for ‘Astro Adventurers’ (one of this year’s top trends) to watch the Northern Lights (as well as a great starting point for an Arctic adventure).
08 Panglao
Panglao Island, located in the province of Bohol, Philippines, is emerging as another Asian wellness and wellbeing destination, and a great alternative to more familiar places in Europe.
09 Stuttgart
Stuttgart, in southwest Germany, known as the birthplace of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, is shrugging off its industrial image to welcome more travellers after this year’s European football championships.
10 Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram, the gateway to Kerala in tropical southern India, remains a popular destination for ‘Reset Jetters’ (more on these later) to focus on their health and wellbeing in what many believe to be the most beautiful, relaxing, serene part of the country.
