Airlines that fly from Gatwick to Faro
British Airways, easyJet, Monarch, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Thomas Cook Airlines and Tui all offer direct flights to Faro from Gatwick Airport.
Terminal Information – Departing
British Airways, easyJet and Tui all fly from the North Terminal. Norwegian and Monarch fly out from the South Terminal. Always check your boarding pass for up to date information. If you're flying from the North Terminal and arriving by train you will need to take the free inter-terminal shuttle. This is fast and frequent, but give yourself a bit of extra time to navigate your way through the airport.
Both of the terminals at Gatwick Airport have a massive range of dining and shopping options. They're like mini-shopping malls. If you're flying to Portugal you can take advantage of tax free shopping. As well as World Duty Free you'll find designer stores like Ted Baker, high street stores like Mango, and specialist shops like Harrods and World of Whiskies. Gatwick offer a 'reserve from home' service, where you can reserve items from participating stores and pick them up before you fly. You can also choose to 'collect on return', picking up your shopping from the excess baggage desk once you get back to London.
There are lots of great places to eat in both terminals, covering a range of world cuisines. Jamie Oliver seems to have taken over the North Terminal with a bar, an Italian restaurant, and a grab 'n' go bakery. There's a range of executive lounges at the airport, offering complimentary Wi-Fi, snacks and drinks: perfect if you want to treat yourself before your flight.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Bus lines 14 and 16 connect Faro Airport with the city. From Faro you can take trains and connecting buses to other towns and resorts in the Algarve. This can be quite time consuming. We recommend either organising an airport transfer or renting a car (don't forget to compare car hire prices at Faro Airport). Car hire is very popular, especially during the summer, so make sure you book your car hire as early as possible.
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly to Portugal from the UK. We recommend arriving at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight is due to depart.
What to expect in Faro
The Algarve is in the same time zone as the UK. The currency is the Euro (€). The weather is generally good all year round, so even if you visit in the depths of winter you can expect bright sunshine and a bit of warmth. The high season lasts from June to September. Outside of these months the resorts are very quiet, and some restaurants and bars shut down all together. Most people speak English, although the local language is Portuguese: don't get it mixed up with Spanish. Being able to say hello (bom dia) or good evening (boa tarde) goes a long way, as does being able to say thank you (obrigado/obrigada).
