Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Germanwings fly from Manchester Airport's Terminal 1. This is the airport's largest terminal, with a good range of shops and places to grab a bite to eat. The departure lounge has one hour of free Wi-Fi for every guest, perfect if you just want to relax and catch up with your online networking. If you have a bit of work to do before you fly, or just want a bit of extra comfort, you can check into the Escape Lounge. Prices start at £19.99* per person. Book in advance: the lounge fills up pretty quickly, especially during the summer. In the main departure lounge you'll find plenty of shops, including airport favourites like Biza Tax & Duty Free as well as some high street names like Monsoon and Fat Face. If you're hungry you can pop into the likes of Giraffe, Starbucks and Bar MCR for a quick refreshment. Fast-track security is available for £3.50* but you need to book by 10pm the day before your flight.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Germanwings flights usually land at Terminal 1. The airport is well connected by public transport and you can reach the city by rail, bus or by car. The Intercity-Express train station is located underground, below the arrivals hall. The S-13 commuter train reaches the city centre in 15 minutes, and tickets cost €2.70* (just under £2). There is a taxi rank outside the terminal. Cabs are metered, but we'd recommend budgeting about €25* (roughly £18) for the trip into the city centre. If you're planning to rent a car you'll need to pop over to Terminal 2, which is a short walk away. Remember you can compare car hire with Skyscanner to find the best deals.
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly from Manchester to Cologne. We recommend arriving at the airport two hours before departure for international flights.
What to expect in Cologne
Cologne is one hour ahead of Manchester and the currency is the Euro (€). Cologne has its own beer, Kolsch, which the locals are very proud of. Ordering an Altbier (brewed in neighbouring Dusseldorf) is considered a faux pas. Prices in Cologne are lower than Manchester, and you can enjoy a good night out very cheaply. The weather in Cologne is quite extreme. Summer temperatures can easily soar above 25°C. If you're visiting for the famous Christmas markets you'll need to bring plenty of cosy clothes as the temperature drops to near freezing during the winter months.
